I don't know if you guys follow soccer (futbol ) or not, but I for one sure hated to see the English side lose to Portugal.. Seems like penalty kicks are no way to lose a match. It did not help that you guys had to play a man down for a half or more.   Hated to see the loss but it was a good run nonetheless.

John, thanks for the condolences. I personally don't follow football at all, I'm a Rugby and Cricket guy. In fact I haven't watched a football match in over 40 years, including this one. That said it's never nice to lose at anything, but maybe I'll be able to go out now without every other car having the English flag flying from it. Flying the flag and patriotic fervour are very un-English traits and are rather undignified. Apparently we do have the best players, they just don't seem to be able to come together in a team.

Now the Ashes tour to Australia of the England cricket team, that really is a matter of life and death!

Colin

John,

Looking forward to Wednesday night when the French whoop the backsides of the Portugese. Watch out for more dives than Swan Lake

What odds Cristiano Ronaldo playing at Man U with Wayne Rooney next season? Mind you I hear that there are some vacancies at the Royal Shakespeare Company. I suppose there's some consolation that Wayne Rooney took to heart the coaching of playing the ball and not the man. Shame in this case it was the balls Dave White38900.661712963

Don,

You shouldn't have been really. In the history of the World Cup, a South American team has never won in Europe. And so it remains.

I suspect that it's going to be a Germany v France final and hopefully this time the French will have a stronger Marginot Line

Interesting world cup!
Who would have thunk that Zedane would have taken a page from Rooney's book. What in the world was he thinking?
I suppose that Italy winning the whole thing makes the US tie with Italy seem a little more hopeful for US Soccer.

The last time I saw England play Portugal was during the European Cup and I was sitting in a sports bar in Scotland cheering for the English side. (after all a common language means something) To my surprise my enthusaism generated a bit of hostility with the locals, who were all pulling for Portugal. Strange politics over there.

I was hoping Italy wouldn't win, 'cause all the Aussies who've been saying we were robbed can whine a bit more now. But really, taking a dive in the box with 5 seconds to go? Then again we would never have beaten Germany.

The only good thing to come from Italy's success was my free coffee this morning. My coffee guy is Italian/Australian

You guys did play Italy well.   And that was a dive in the box.

I am having a mild case of post wc depression. It's going to be hard to wait 4 years.

John

Its the same in Wales were I live they all support whoever England are playing against

So I put three enormous England Flags up during the world cup    I'm not popular, the Welsh and Scotts are bitter and twisted over stuff that happended 500 years ago, oh and the fact that they are rubbish at football , so all they can do is gloat when somone elses team gets beat.

You are a brave man Russell. I know those feelings run deep. I was staying at a B and B near Pitlochary and the hostess was describing a battle, Banackburn (terrible spelling) I believe, which was perhaps 500 years ago and she started tearing up in the telling.

Later during that trip I stopped at an outdoor political rally of sorts where there was a lot of drinking and a lot of talk about the new Scottish Parlement and a lot of talk about "independance" Very interesting.

We Southerners (Rebels ya know) are still having a time getting over the Civil War so I can understand

In fairness I know a lot of nice Scotts, and Welsh People, and my wife is Irish. Its all a bit strange! in England if any of the home nations are playing against anyone other than England they will be supported in England, but not in the other countries of the UK, in fact during every game they were people wandering about in opposition shirts.

I agree about the Scotts. Wonderful folk. I have never been to Welsh country, though that is in the works, as is Ireland.
